LETTERING AND NUMBERING

There were a vast number of sizes and colour options adopted by LMS during their operation. There is insufficient documentary evidence, in the way of colour images, to be specific in every usage and photographs that are available can be open to interpretation. We have produced the most commonly used variations and have included a product key for these. Please see the Lettering and Numbering Guide for reference Click here for colour options.

The LMS post-1934 lining scheme was as described on page 44 of Volume 1 of Jenkinson and Essery’s 3 Volume “Illustrated History of LMS Coaching Stock”.
From 1934 onwards, the LMS adopted a simplified lining scheme. This took the form of a single horizontal ½ inch yellow line just below the cantrail, a similar ½ inch line above the tops of the windows and two ½ inch yellow lines separated by a 1 inch black line just below the windows. See FRH4212 Yellow/Black/Yellow Coach Lining + tight radius corners and FG1896 for single yellow.
